How does the laser work?
The Pinpointe FootLaser kills the fungus that lives in and under the toenail. The laser is FDA cleared, with a clinical cure rate of 88%. The laser light passes throught the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instanly clear, it will take time for the previously infected nail to grow out and the new nail to form. This process takes 6 to 12 months depending on the rate of growth of the toenail.
How is the procedure performed? Is there any preparation? Any Discomfort?
The Pinpointe FootLaser is applied by the doctor in a grid pattern on the entire nail and surrounding skin All the nails are treated with the laser to prevent any unseen nail plate infections from developing. Patients are able to walk in and walk out and go about their normal day. There is no anesthesia required. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes.
During the procedure most people feel no pain to minimal discomfort. Some people feel a warming sensation and a few will feel a slight pinprick sensation. There is no specific preparation for the procedure other than the removal of any nail polish or nail decorations the day before. On the day of the procedure Dr. Zwiebel may file down the nails with a mechanical burr to reduce thickness of the infected nail and to remove any loose nail debris caused by the fungus.
Will the fungus (onychomycosis) come back?
The fungus is killed after one treatment, but Dr. Zwiebel will reccomend care techniques to reduce the chance for recurrence of the infection.
With any nail treatment including oral medications there is a chance of reinfection because fungus is present throughout the environment. The doctor will reccomend measures to reduce this risk and modification of behaviors to help avoid getting reinfected with a fungus.
